
Thomas W. Simpson, Ph.D.
President and Executive Director
Dr. Tom Simpson is the Executive Director of Water Stewardship, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to improving water quality through implementation and verification of continuous improvement programs in the food system, and improved policy effectiveness. Dr. Simpson was a Professor in the Department of Environmental Science and Technology at the University of Maryland from 1992-2008 and has a BS from Virginia Tech and an MS and Ph.D. from Penn State, all in Soil Science. From 1980 to 1992, he was Assistant to full Professor of Soil-Environmental Quality at Virginia Tech. While at the University of Maryland, Dr. Simpson coordinated science-policy activities regarding nonpoint source pollution in the Chesapeake Bay watershed for Maryland. In the last 10 years, he has chaired the Chesapeake Bay Program's Nutrient Subcommittee and served as Regional Coordinator for the nine-university Mid-Atlantic Water Program.
Ronald F. Korcak, Ph.D.
Program Coordinator & Co-Principal for Agriculture
Dr. Ron Korcak is the Program Coordinator of Water Stewardship, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to improving water quality through implementation and verification of continuous improvement programs in the food system, and improved policy effectiveness. Dr. Korcak was the Associate Director of the USDA-ARS Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (ARS) from 1999 until his retirement in February 2008. He has a B.S. from Cornell University and a M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, all in Soil Science. Dr. Korcak spent his research career with ARS and started his administrative positions in 1993 as Research Leader of the Fruit Laboratory. Prior to his ARS positions he mapped soils for the Soil Conservation Service and served as a Soils Analyst in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. His service with the Corps of Engineers included time in Vietnam.
Dale Gardner
Chesapeake Agricultural Program Coordinator
Prior to joining WSI in March 2009, Mr. Gardner was the Executive Secretary of the Virginia State Dairymen's Association. During his tenure as Executive Secretary, Mr. Gardner was actively engaged in environmental issues. He started the Virginia Waste Solutions Forum, a collaborative group of producer, state agency representatives and environmental groups all working to reduce the nutrient impact on the Chesapeake Bay. He also served on the advisory group for the Mid-Atlantic Water Program. Mr. Gardner is a graduate of Virginia Tech. He was a partner in his family's purebred Holstein farm in Bridgewater, Virginia for 25 years.
Sally Szydlowski
Technical and Policy Analyst
Sally Szydlowski joined Water Stewardship in May 2009 after working for the Chesapeake Research Consortium at the EPA’s Chesapeake Bay Program Office for three years. While at the Chesapeake Bay Program, Ms. Bradley assisted with nutrient and sediment reduction efforts in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Her duties included providing support to the Chesapeake Bay Program's Nutrient Subcommittee, Agricultural Nutrient and Sediment Reduction Workgroup, Urban Stormwater Workgroup, and Sediment Workgroup and assisting with various projects related to nutrients and water quality. She is also the co-author of a Chesapeake Bay Program report that analyzed the feasibility of using poultry litter for energy in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Ms. Bradley received a B.A. in Biology with a minor in Environmental Studies from St. Mary's College of Maryland and an M.S. in Environmental Sciences and Policy from Johns Hopkins University.
